Lala plays cricket with Kumar Sangakkara's actual test bat
KNOW YOUR WREN: LALANDRA WIJESEKERA
We have some amazing cricketers with extraordinary cricketing pedigree here at The Mighty Wrens! To celebrate the talent and diversity of our players, I pleased to introduce a new series called HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW THE WRENS?
The first episode of our new series for 2016-17 season will have a close look at club legend, gifted allrounder, and genuine nice guy LALANDRA WIJESEKERA who plays with our mighty A Reserve team.
Lala has played in this team since 2010 and has won 3 NDCA premierships with The Wrens during this time. He has been a dominant force in this mighty team and has won plenty of batting and bowling awards from the Northern Districts Cricket Association and Wrens Club awards. His devastating attacking style whilst batting and cunning pace bowling has earned him the reputation of a fierce and respected competitor in the NDCA competition.
So what's the secret to his talent and success?
I've watched and played with Lala and his big qualities are great technique, hard work, natural competitor and selfless teammate. He's also one of the most laidback Wren in the nest.
However, what you and most of us didn't know is that Lala also has a further quality few of us can ever hold - brilliant cricket DNA and impeccable cricket bloodlines.
You see Lala's cousin is the great, great Sri Lankan international test and one day cricket KUMAR SANGAKKARA.
Yes, that's right,, the legendary batsmen who:
* played 134 tests,
* scored 12,400 test runs,
* averaged 57.40 with the bat,
* scored 38 test hundreds and 52 test fifties.
I forgot to mention KUMAR also:
* played 404 One day internationals,
* scored 14,200 test runs,
* averaged 41.20 with the bat,
* scored 25 ODI hundreds and 93 ODI fifties.
Lala's record is equally impressive at The Wrens:
* played 71 matches at The Wrens,
* scored 2,652 runs,
* averaged 45 with the bat,
* scored 2 hundreds and 23 fifties
* taken 110 wickets at 15.5
Finally, what you also wouldn't know is that Lala is extremely proud and fortunate to be given Kumar's actual test bat from the Great man himself! So the next time Lala punishes the red leather through cover and extra cover for another crisp boundary, remember some of Kumar's 12,400 test runs came from the Great Sri Lankan's test bat!
The Wrens are currently negotiating with Kumar Sangakkara to play for the Wrens this season once his Big Bash contract with the Hobart Hurricanes expires. Watch this space!
Just another reason to play your cricket with The Mighty Wrens!!!!
